Workshop::The Space Between Voice and Gesture by Alessandra Eramo

9th / 10th / 11th May

THE SPACE BETWEEN VOICE AND GESTURE
Workshop led by Alessandra Eramo

The Space between Voice and Gesture is a workshop led by artist Alessandra Eramo which explores aural and written phenomena, focussing on the relation between voice and gesture. The goal of the workshop is to discover our unique vocal qualities and to create a composition for voice, gesture, drawings and field recordings. The workshop will conclude with a public performance.

The voice is ephemeral. How can I make the presence of my voice visible?

“The voice is our body, memory and identity. A crucial aspect of my ongoing artistic research is the tension between orality and writing: the voice is the original human instrument, it can be expanded, transformed or symbolised, the voice becomes gesture, it can emerge as drawing and as a graphic score, the voice can be recorded for eternity. Detached from visual-acoustic hierarchies, voice and drawing are inseparably connected in a hand-mouth coding with its endless possibilities of interpretation and translation. For each voice to express itself, not only are the uvula and vocal cords involved but also the vibrant, gesticulating body in its totality and uniqueness. For me, gesture is a physical movement as well as the trace of a performative act.“

PRACTICAL:
Working in large and small groups, we will:

*work on the breath and deepen our listening and awareness of environment and the voice
*use extended vocal techniques, noise, distortion, alienation of the voice, invented languages, in order to discover the original physical presence of the voice as a bodily expression.
*work on listening and visualising the voice through the creation of abstract and automatic drawings, and also through recording our voices and environmental sounds in spaces near the workshop.
*create scores and a repertoire of gestures never disconnected from the voice.
*experience together an innovative interdisciplinary practice in vocal performance art.

The Workshop is held in English and/or in German
